About the firm

A small firm, on purpose

Julia & Rana has practised from East London since 2016, and from the City since [year]. We are five solicitors.

The practice

What we do, and what we do not

We act in eight areas: employment, discrimination under the Equality Act 2010, family, immigration, litigation, defamation, commercial lease and property disputes, and the legal questions arising from businesses deploying AI.

We do not do conveyancing, personal injury, road traffic, crime or wills and probate drafting. Those are perfectly good areas of practice. They are not ours, and a firm that claims all of them is telling you something about how it works.

The eight we do have something in common: they arrive together. The senior manager being managed out holds a visa that depends on the job. The founder going through a divorce has a company both sides now want valued. The executive facing a discrimination claim has a reputation that will be searched by every future employer.

Most firms handle one of those and refer the rest. We were built to handle the set.

Standards

How we work

A partner handles your matter

Not a paralegal with partner oversight. The person you meet is the person who runs the file.

We tell you when a case is not worth running

The advice that costs us a client is the advice worth paying for.

Costs are agreed in writing before we start

With a call when the work approaches the estimate, rather than an invoice afterwards.

We answer

Enquiries get a response the same working day. It is a low bar and a surprising number of firms do not clear it.

Clients

Who we act for

Professionals, founders, company directors and partners, and families whose lives cross more than one country. Some are long-standing clients of the East London office who have been with us since the beginning. Some are executives and business owners who found us because nobody else would look at the whole problem.

We act for employees rather than employers in most employment matters, and we advise employers on risk, policy and compliance. We do not act for both sides in the same matter, and we run conflict checks before taking instructions.

Languages

Being understood, not processed

We advise in [English and X, Y, Z]. That means conducting the matter in that language — taking instructions, explaining advice and appearing — rather than arranging an interpreter and hoping the nuance survives.

For clients whose legal problems cross borders, that is not a convenience. It is frequently the difference between being understood and being processed.
